Gerardo Asensio Martín and Oskar Staufer participated in the competitive selection process of the innovate! Academy for applied research, supported by the Joachim Herz Foundation. The two INM scientists are among seven awardees who convinced the jury with their scientific excellence and the transfer potential of their research projects. Since October 1, 2024, they have been receiving not only financial support for translating their research from the lab to practical applications but also participating in a comprehensive seminar program that trains them in entrepreneurial thinking.
Dr. Gerardo Asensio Martín’s project is based on a recently developed technology at INM for the permanent self-moisturization of contact lenses. This technology eliminates the need for constantly applying hyaluronic acid to treat dry and irritated eyes. Instead, bacteria embedded in the contact lenses themselves produce hyaluronic acid, keeping the eye moist. During the funding period, Asensio Martín will develop a contact lens prototype and standardize and automate the manufacturing process.
Together with Dr. Ivaylo Balabanov, Dr. Oskar Staufer is working on a novel technology for cancer treatment through immunotherapy. In this process, immune cells are strengthened in the lab to fight cancer cells more effectively. With the support of the innovate! Academy, he aims to advance his technology from the research stage to a prototype that meets regulatory requirements for medical devices and is ready for clinical applications.
